Summary

Incorporating tummy time into a baby’s daily routine is a simple yet powerful way to support their holistic development. This practice not only fosters physical strength but also contributes to cognitive and sensory advancements. As parents and caregivers, recognizing the importance of tummy time and making it a regular part of an infant’s routine can significantly impact their overall well-being and set the stage for future developmental milestones.

Tummy time is the time your baby spends playing on their tummy. It’s not just a position.

As soon as they are born.

Skin to skin on your chest is your baby’s first tummy time, followed by cuddles on your lap.

Introduce tummy time on the floor from when you go home from the hospital.

Several times a day.

For small periods of time initially.

As much as they and you can fit in during the day.

An hour a day for under 3 months.

For most of their awake time until they begin to crawl.

It’s recommended to start tummy time with newborn babies as soon as the first week after birth. For newborns, tummy time sessions are brief, ranging from 1 to 2 minutes at a time, a few times per day while they are awake and being supervised. As your child gets older,  tummy time sessions can gradually increase to up to 20 minutes a day, broken into multiple sessions.
