Determining if your child requires therapy services involves considering various factors related to their behavior, emotions, and development. Here are some signs that may indicate a need for therapy:
- Behavioral Changes: Persistent and significant changes in behavior, such as aggression, withdrawal, or sudden mood swings, may indicate underlying issues that could benefit from therapeutic intervention.
- Difficulty in School: If your child is struggling academically, socially, or behaviorally in school, it might be an indicator that additional support through therapy could be beneficial.
- Social Isolation: If your child constantly avoids social interactions, has difficulty making friends, or displays social withdrawal, therapy can help address any underlying issues contributing to these behaviors.
- Expressing Emotional Distress: If your child frequently expresses feelings of sadness, anxiety, or fear, or if they have experienced a significant life event, therapy can provide a safe space for them to express and process their emotions.
- Changes in Sleep or Appetite: Noticeable changes in sleeping patterns or appetite can be signs of emotional distress, and therapy can help explore and address the underlying issues.
- Regression in Developmental Milestones: If your child experiences a regression in developmental milestones, such as speech or motor skills, therapy can assist in addressing and supporting their development.
- Traumatic Experiences: If your child has experienced a traumatic event or loss, therapy can be crucial in helping them cope and navigate their emotions.
- Persistent Challenges: If your child faces persistent challenges in areas such as attention, impulse control, or communication, a therapist can assess and provide strategies to address these difficulties.
It’s important to note that every child is unique, and these signs may not necessarily indicate a need for therapy in every case. However, if you observe multiple signs or have concerns about your child’s well-being, consulting with a healthcare professional or therapist can help you determine the best course of action for your child’s specific situation.
In order to process your claims with insurance or Medicaid, you will need a physician’s referral or prescription to receive an evaluation and therapy. Private-pay clients do not require a physician’s referral or prescription, but our therapists may ask for one to keep on file.
Guiding Principles
Strong Foundations
At Little Tesla, our therapy is strongly guided by our belief in the strengths of a developmental approach to therapy. We support children to develop their skills in their everyday activities, school tasks, and social and emotional development by identifying weaknesses and gaps in component areas lower down in the developmental pyramid and working with the children and families to strengthen these areas.
Joyful Connection
Parents, caretakers, and other family members are integral to our therapy sessions. Through coaching and education, we strive to support them to deepen their connection with their child. And much progress can be made within the context of these relationships.
Play-based Therapy
At Little Tesla Occupational Therapy play is an integral part of all our treatment approaches. Occupational Therapists are skilled at choosing activities that are a just-right fit for the optimal challenge to a child’s skills, and the very best therapy sessions are those in which the child doesn’t even realize that they are working hard!
